BIO

Alice aka Seshat is an artist specialized in the act of writing — a writer in the broadest and deepest sense of the term. Her practice unfolds across painting, murals, calligraphy, and performance, exploring writing as a sensory, cognitive, and embodied experience. Through these mediums, she challenges conventional conceptions of writing, questioning its role in contemporary culture and weaving it together with philosophy and science — two fields she considers intrinsically connected to art.

Having moved to London in 2003, she studied Illustration, Graphic Design, and Calligraphy. After working for over a decade as a graphic designer specializing in typography, in 2014 she began an apprenticeship with the calligrapher Paul Antonio. In 2016 she founded her own studio, AmpersandAlice, dedicated to lettering and calligraphy. In recent years she has reconnected with Italy, becoming a member of the EDF crew — a collective devoted to promoting social art. Among her collaborations are institutions such as the Royal Academy of Arts, the British Library, Montblanc, Saatchi Yates, and the British Royal Family.

At the heart of her artistic research lies a central question: what is handwriting today? In an age profoundly shaped by digital technologies — where we are immersed in signs, from algorithmic codes to advertising and Writing — her work seeks to restore handwriting as a meaningful gesture rooted in the body.

Writing has shaped her identity as much as her identity has transformed her understanding of writing. Emerging independently across different civilizations, writing bears witness to the universal human impulse to express oneself through graphic symbols — an instinct to create, to order, to transmit knowledge, and to affirm one’s being. It is this very impulse that guides Alice’s creative process.

From this reflection emerged Interowriting — an interdisciplinary research project and artistic practice that explores writing as a process in relation with the world, rather than as a mere expression of the individual mind. Grounded in the neuroscientific theory of interoception — the perception and interpretation of signals originating within and beyond the body — Interowriting conceives writing as a dynamic extension of the body’s rhythms, movements, and sensations, situating the graphic gesture within a relational ecosystem.

The project critically examines the symbolic and cultural erasure of handwriting in the digital age, proposing it instead as a site of resistance, presence, and human connection. By interweaving ancient practices with contemporary research, Interowriting opens new possibilities for understanding writing not as something static, but as a living, transforming, and deeply embodied process.
